Amid Supply Chain Shortage, Local Stores Expect Small Business Saturday | New

BRENTWOOD, Tn. (WSMV) – As shoppers walk through the doors of big box stores on Black Friday, local “mom-and-pop” stores await their turn tomorrow on Small Business Saturday. As businesses nationwide face a supply shortage, many businesses in Middle Tennessee face higher shipping costs and delays in receiving products.

“I only received maybe 15% of my normal Christmas orders,” said Alicia Helm, owner of the Spruce store in Brentwood. “I don’t know, maybe it’s on a boat.”

Small Business Saturday, first observed in 2010, aims to encourage people to shop for the holidays at small businesses. For every dollar spent in a small business, 67 cents stays in the local economy, according to American Express – which created Small Business Saturday the day after Thanksgiving.

“You see big box stores people flocking and you know if you only had one of those days it could be your whole month and I think that’s what we want people to remember. Mentioned Alyssa Coffman, owner of Aly + Sy in Brentwood.

For retail entrepreneurs, Helm says it has been difficult to get personalized items on time and about everything delivered on a ship. It is a problem facing businesses across the country.

“Fortunately, most people seem to understand that this is the nature of retailing right now,” Helm said. “One thing about being a small, local business is that you really develop relationships. So I can really see these clients who have become friends.

While it has been an unpredictable year with evolving COVID-19 restrictions, staff shortages and supply chain issues, local businesses are hoping they can count on a big boom tomorrow when big box shoppers move in. locally. is now with you on the road!
