MANILA, Philippines — Owners of motorcycles with unregistered or non-compliant top cases will not be apprehended, at least for now, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said yesterday.
LTO chief Teofilo Guadiz said he issued a memorandum suspending the inspection and apprehension of motorcycles with accessories that do not meet LTO guidelines.
Guadiz said the LTO is reviewing complaints of excessive fines for motorcycle accessories.
“The issue of heavy fines is one of the aspects of the March 2016 memorandum that is under review. Rest assured that we will do our best to provide more affordable and practical fines that fit the times,” he said in a statement.
Under the 2016 memorandum, a fine of 5,000 pesos will be imposed on motorists caught with unregistered top cases and panniers.
This also includes custom made accessories which do not conform to the standards and product specifications set by the Department of Trade and Industry.
Guadiz urged motorists to register their accessories as this will ensure the products are used correctly to ensure driver and public safety.
