Local homebuilders continue to be hampered by supply chain issues

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Supply chain issues continue to be a problem across the country, and homebuilders have been particularly hard hit, often facing significant construction delays.

“It’s frustrating for the owner and for us as builders. I would say that in general the last year to year and a half has been quite a challenge to be able to be able to order materials in a timely manner without too many delays,” said Steve Hostetter, Owner of Hostetter Custom Homes in Rockingham County.

With a lack of available housing in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area, demand for new construction has been significant.

Hostetter said while construction was stable, some items like windows and garage doors took a lot longer to get. Some building materials have also become more expensive and difficult to acquire.

“Anything to do with metals, whether it’s copper or steel, things like that, and then gypsum is skyrocketing, so now there’s a shortage of gypsum, so drywall is going up soaring. So it’s disheartening, but hopefully it will correct itself,” Hostetter said.

Construction delays caused problems for builders. While the business remains strong, Hostetter said some customers have turned away from building homes.

“Prices have skyrocketed on a lot of materials and the delays I think are starting to affect people’s stomachs or their patience to go ahead and pull the trigger to build. We’ve seen some people back off and delay and say right now that I don’t want to build,” he said.

Although the supply chain has caused issues, Hostetter said things have improved slightly in 2022 compared to 2021, and he’s optimistic things will start to improve overall.

“When it comes to lumber yards, prices are coming down, which I think would mean there are more available. I think it’s better. I don’t know if it will ever get back to where it was both with timing and with pricing, I doubt it, but you never know,” he said.
