PFVA welcomes Afghan offer to supply more agricultural products to Pakistan

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News – September 3, 2022): The Afghan government has offered Pakistan more agricultural products than tomato and onion under the same tariff removal condition.

In an official communication sent by the Afghan Ministry of Industry and Commerce to the relevant authorities of Pakistan on Saturday, it was stated that Afghanistan has witnessed an increase in agricultural products this year and if these products are not exported , they would be wasted.

“Since Pakistan has already decided to import tomatoes and onions from Afghanistan by removing tariffs and in this situation where we have increased agricultural production, so it is requested to import more products in the same conditions,” the letter read.

The Afghan Ministry of Commerce and Communication added that its businessmen have been urged to continue their exports with good prices in mind.

Reacting to the offer, Chief Patron of Pakistan Fruit and Vegetables Importers and Exporters Association (PFVA), Waheed Ahmad welcomed the announcement and said Pakistan faces huge loss of life, property and crops due to devastating floods and in this situation, if our neighboring brother country makes an offer to supply agricultural products, it would be very much welcomed by the Association.

He also expressed hope that the supply of vegetables, including tomato and onion, would continue until the Pakistani government announces the duty waiver.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the Pak-Afghan Mixed Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI), Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, also welcomed the Afghan government’s announcement.

Speaking to APP, Zia Sarhadi said that a few days after the government’s decision to import tomatoes and onions from Afghanistan and Iran, the prices of these two products, which increased abnormally due to floods, showed a reduction of about 50%. This is a good offer and we should take advantage of it as our country has suffered very severe crop damage due to floods and we may face shortage of different vegetables and fruits in the future,” Zia said.

He said importing fresh vegetables and fruits from Afghanistan is also economically suitable for Pakistan due to the easy and quick access of produce in the country.

He also thanked the Afghan government for making this offer at a time when the nation of Pakistan is going through a very difficult time and difficulties following a natural calamity.
